Pharmacy School Hell

Filed under: Pharmacy School — dsalyer @ 7:57 am

As you may already know, I am in my third year of pharmacy school. The Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum requires at least 2 years of undergraduate studies (prerequisites like Gen. Chem, Organic Chem, Biology, Anatomy, Physics, etc.) then pharmacy school itself is 4 years. Most people usually do 3 years of undergrad and some even get a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Biology. Pharmacy school consists of three years of coursework then the final year is entirely clerkships, or rotations. There is not a lot of flexibility in the PharmD curriculum. During the first year, all 125+ students take the exact same courses (Physiology, Bio Chem, Drug Design, etc). Then, beginning in the second year, you have the “flexibility” of one additional elective course. Pretty much, you get to see the same 125 faces everyday. You average 19-23 credit hours per semester. Yeah, it sucks. Especially when you only took about 15 hours as an undergrad. Add in work. Add in marriage. Add in social life. End product: Lots of stress, no free time.

The worst part of pharmacy school is block exams. Unlike high school and undergrad, where you have exams scattered here and there in different courses throughout the semester, in pharmacy school we have block exams. Once a month, every month, we get the pleasure of one weekend filled with all of our exams. We typically have 2 exams Friday, 2 on Saturday, and 2 on Monday, lots of caffeine, lots of stress, and very little sleep or pleasure (Unless you are like me, sitting here procrastinating).

The last 2 and a half years have really been hell. Nevertheless, they have flown by and it is almost over. I have 3 more months of coursework, then it’s off to do my rotations. During rotations you spend 1 calendar month at a different location (i.e. one month at Walgreens, one month at the health department, one month at a hospital, etc). It will be a huge relief to not have to study any longer and I am sure it will really fly by. Even though school has been trying, I know that it will pay off in the end, when I reap the fruits of my labor. I am counting down the days…

Yours Truly

Well, since I just started a new blog, I figured I should tell you a little about me. Even though most of you probably already know me, but maybe you will learn something new.

The Past

I was born and raised in a small town, Coeburn, Virginia, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. A very small town mind you–Population 2800. In fact, there are just over 40,000 people in the county. I come from a family of four–My mother is a Realtor, my dad recently retired from the United States Postal Service, and I have one older brother who manages computer information systems for several auto auctions in VA and TN. During high school, I played baseball and football and managed to make decent grades with little effort. I later attended the University of Virginia’s College at Wise for three years prior to Pharmacy School.

The Present

I am happily married to the love of my life, Amanda, who is originally from Nashville, TN (How did we meet? Well, that’s a story for another day). I am currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and reside in Lexington. I am almost finished with the pharmacy curriculum and will soon be Dr. Dustin Salyer, PharmD.

The Future

After graduation, Amanda and I plan to move back toward her home in Nashville and I hope to be licensed in Tennessee and Kentucky and practice in both states.

For Fun

Well, I am pretty boring these days. With school and marriage, I honestly don’t have a whole lot of time for fun. I used to enjoy hunting, fishing, and anything else outdoors, although I rarely do any of these anymore. I guess I had all my fun in my younger years. I have always found pleasure in somewhat less popular activities: shooting pool, ping-pong, darts, and any kind of cards…oh yeah, and Dominoes. I listen to any kind of music (although I prefer classic rock) and enjoy watching any good movie.

Bush’s Economic Stimulus Plan

Filed under: Politics — dsalyer @ 4:27 pm

Politics are usually the least of my worries, however this current topic has caught my attention. In case you are not up to date in current events, President Bush and several members of Congress have proposed an Economic Stimulus Plan aimed at boosting the economy to prevent the impeding recession. Although the specifics are currently being negotiated, the Economic Stimulus Plan allows for a tax rebate to be given to most employed citizens. It is estimated that individuals would receive $300-$800 and additional $300 for dependents. Also included is a boost in food stamp and unemployment allowances, and incentives for businesses. According to CNN & Fox News, the rebate would go to almost everyone earning a paycheck, including those who make too little to pay income taxes and would likely cover individuals earning between $3,000 and $75,000 in 2007.

The Plan is expected to be finalized this afternoon, introduced and passed in the House by early February and the Senate by mid-February. Then it would take an additional couple of weeks for the Treasury Department to cut and mail rebate checks, which may be slowed by the concurrent tax season.

Well I don’t know about you, but I think this is the best idea President Bush has had in 8 years. Like Amanda said, “Maybe he is trying to go out with a few people liking him.” Personally, I think it is about time that the Government cut us some slack and allows us a tax break. Even though the Stimulus Plan may temporarily increase the Federal Deficit, I think it will stimulate the economy in the long run. Wouldn’t you like to have an additional $800 in your pocket? What would you buy? Personally, I am excited about this Plan–I just hope it passes!

Sorry to bore you with my first post, but I assure you that I will have more interesting posts in the future…but right now I am in the middle of block exams (more on this later). Hope you’ve enjoyed reading and don’t forget to comment!
